The built, natural and social environments are becoming increasingly intertwined, interdependent and indeterminate and they require a new breed of professional to effectively design and manage change. Canada was the first to develop a new interdisciplinary curriculum for environmental design, and professor Perks was instrumental to this.
Tjeerd Deelstra from IIUE, Delft (NL) was invited to teach on the subject in the 1980's, and in September 2009 professor Perks offered him a new Canadian publication on Delft and its role in the 17th century's global economy as a token of appreciation.
Professor David van Vliet, former student and now professor in sustainable architecture at the University of Manitoba presented the book 'Vermeer's Hat, The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World' to Tjeerd Deelstra.
