Spanish presidency EU aims at integrated urban regeneration

 On 1 January, Spain assumed the presidency of the EU. One of its spearheads is setting the agenda for integrated urban regeneration.

Spain has defined a set of priorities that address the three P’s of sustainable development.

1. The environmental dimension (planet):

Aim: Use urban regeneration as an instrument to fight against climate change en urban sprawl

Actions:

• Improvement of the energy efficiency of buildings

• Introduction of renewable energies

• Reduction of mobility and promotion of non-motorised means of transport

• General improvement of the environmental conditions (air, noise, etc).

 • Reduction of Land consumption by the regeneration of the existing city instead of consuming land for new developments

 

2. The Economic Dimension (prosperity):

Aim: Develop the potential of urban “green” renewal to create economic growth and employment.

 

3. The Social Dimension:

Integrate comprehensive social programmes with (physical) urban regeneration programmes on deprived neighbourhoods.

Spring agenda

In April a high level conference on sustainable building, revitalization and rehabilitation of districts took place.

In June the European Union’s Housing Ministers and Urban Development Ministers meet in Madrid to discuss the theme Housing and Urban Rehabilitation
