, chair of the Heidelberg International Club and mayor of Heidelberg.
Outstanding contribution to the protection and enhancement of the environment of towns and cities
Director Tjeerd Deelstra is an architect and urban planner. Early in his career he realised the necessity of sustainable development of the urban environment. In 1989 he founded the International Institute for the Urban Environment (IIUE).
Under Tjeerd Deelstra’s directorate the Institute has developed and implemented environmental plans and strategies for many towns and cities in Europe and elsewhere. Working closely with local communities the Institute has provided initiatives across a wide range of disciplines including architecture, urban design and planning, traffic and transport, energy use, water and waste management, open space planning, climate management, nature conservation and education. These many and diverse initiatives, from local projects to city-wide plans, have provided sustainable solutions and enduring environmental benefits for the towns and cities involved and for their inhabitants. The International leadership provided by the Institute in sustainable urban development has been of great significance in promoting these positive solutions in many countries.
At the moment the IIUE is preparing a long term European cooperation project on sustainable renovation of the existing building stock in North West Europe.
The Heidelberg Club International Award for Environmental Excellence
The city of Heidelberg through its Heidelberg Club International, actively promotes international co-operation and exchange of know-how. The Club draws together colleagues from the senior ranks of life sciences, environmental strategies and management and sustainable tourism.
The Heidelberg Award for Environmental Excellence was set up in 1995 as a global award to encourage practical accomplishments in the area of lasting benefit to the natural environment.
IIUE is the fifth to receive the Award. The fourth, in 2005 was John Landers representing Planito Direto no Cerrado of Brazil, in recognition for an outstanding contribution to sustainable agriculture.
