Child friendly neighbourhoods provide a healthy, safe and exciting environment, where children can develop their social and motorial skills and that helps them to gradually become independent and responsible participants in the urban public space.  A city friendly to children therefore is a city friendly for all.

Child friendliness is not an easy concept to define. But we can indicate three dimensions which are always included: Throughout the project all actions are concentrated around these three dimensions:
-    The social/econ dimension; Attention for the social conditions in which all residents and users in a neighbourhood are taken into consideration on the base of openness for diversity, equity and solidarity.
-    The physical/ecological dimension; Attention for the conditions for arranging and managing space, quality of public space and infrastructure, ecological balance, rational use of the environment and guaranteeing the quality of the environment.
-    The institutional dimension; Attention for the function of the government (its quality in networking, information and communication), integrated approach (administrative, stakeholders) and for civil structure (commitment inhabitants, trust in government, participation).

Overall aim:
Demonstrate and develop sustainable transformations of neighbourhoods to make NW European cities friendly for children. This means focussing on the cohesion of social/economical, physical/ecological and institutional dimensions of the transformation process.

Objectives:
1.    Developing and testing an assessment toolkit to identify and value child friendliness in neighbourhoods.
2.    Developing sustainable strategies for the implementation and preservation of child friendly neighbourhoods
3.    To implement the transition process towards child friendly neighbourhoods through actions and physical investments in pilot neighbourhoods
